Ovens River gets recovery stocking

Sept. '14 - At the 2014 round of Vic Fish Stock meetings, the ATF was successful in its submission for a recovery stocking of brown trout into the Ovens River between Porepunkah & Harrietteville, following the devastating bush-fires and floods of recent times in the region.

A small group led by ATF committee member Terry George and included ATF members Brian Eddy and Tony Borrack submitted an extensively researched and well prepared proposal and were deservedly rewarded for their efforts - around 2,500 brown trout ranging from 80 grams to 180 grams will be released in the coming months (in time for Christmas holidays) with an additional small number of larger fish to kick start the fishery.

The ATF hopes that the general public will understand that for the river's successful rehabilitatation of trout stocks, it is in their best interest to practice correct catch & release techniques, at least in the short term until the trout can grow to maturity and have a chance to spawn next winter.
